The Feel Something Files: Necklaces That Create the Illusion of a Facial Tweakment
Placebo or not, consider it a confidence boost
This is a little out there. I promise I’m not out of my mind, but I’ve come to find that wearing certain jewelry, a necklace, really, can sculpt your face and give it a little lift— the jawline, cheeks, eyes, neck, all of it.
Not literally, obviously. But optically? Energetically? Posture-wise? Yup. A certain type of necklace can redirect the eye. The right length, shine, shape, and placement can create visual tension upward and sharpen perceived structure. Maybe it’s slightly placebo, but placebo isn’t always a bad thing.
My face appears more defined when I wear my layered necklace stack (I wear 4 daily). They create a kind of visual boundary, almost a frame, that shifts how the eye perceives my upper half. The more I write this, the more I sound like a scammer. But I’m not promising a snatched jawline, just imparting some wisdom to make you feel a little more confident. I’m 38, so a little tweakment without the tweakment (see more here on that topic) is top of mind.
So, with this somewhat laughable, but equally genuine theory, I’m sharing six types of necklaces that I love and how they give you a subtle lift in different areas of the face, depending on how you wear them.
The Jawline Definer
Try a choker: It slightly compresses the neck area, which can make the jaw appear more defined and lifted. Especially effective with off-the-shoulder tops or slicked-back hair.
The Neck Elongator
Try a Y-necklace: The Y-necklace can sharpen the lower face because the eye follows the vertical drop.
The Cheekbone Definer
Try a few layered fine chains: Layered fine chains can soften heaviness around the lower face. Thin chains create movement and diffusion rather than one harsh focal point.
The Upward Attention Seeker
Try a statement necklace placed high on the chest: A bold bib necklace or clustered stones sitting high near the clavicle creates an upward “frame” around the face, almost like contouring through accessories.
The Facial Lengthener
Try a long pendant: Vertical lines naturally elongate. A single pendant that falls below the collarbone can make the entire face appear longer and leaner by extension.
The Lit From Within Glow Maker
Try reflective metals: Silver, diamonds, crystal, and polished gold catch light under the chin and around the neck. This creates contrast and brightness that can make skin appear tighter and more radiant.
And because this idea was fully fleshed out by my unique brain, I wanted to share other creators who buy into my theory and what necklace helps them achieve a little lift.
Ariane Anusbigian: This probably goes without saying, but I feel like a tennis necklace makes anyone’s skin look more glowy. Specifically, I love my Aurate one and have the yellow “gold” version (though it’s actually vermeil). I think it flatters my skin tone more than its white counterpart would! I’ve found this one does a really good job of not flipping around, so the “diamonds” (lab-grown white sapphires) are always facing out! (Ps. I also have a code: ARIANEA20)
Kelly Williams: When I wear this necklace, my eyes look brighter (and my face more awake) because it catches others’ eyes and brings shine to my face. Optically, this necklace functions like a sliver of white base layer, brightening the face by reflecting light.
Sophie Carbonari: For me, necklaces are also postural. When I wear a necklace, particularly one with presence, I’m more aware of my neck, my shoulders, and how I’m holding my upper body. It creates a subtle self-correction that affects everything above it. For the past year, I’ve been wearing this piece from Chez Dede Roma, which says “Sortilegio” (it means spell or enchantment in Italian). It’s become something of a talisman for me. Beyond the postural lift it creates, it’s a conversation piece and a point of connection when I meet people. And honestly? It feels protective. Like a charm I carry with me. When I wear this necklace, my face looks more present because I’m more aware of how I hold myself, as in a ballet class. Shoulders back, head up. I feel empowered and more intentional.
Jamie Rosen | Beauty Notes: I’ve never thought about a necklace making your face look lifted, but I do love the visual definition of a choker. So many makeup artists talk about the brows framing your face, but a necklace really does that, too. I wear this one almost everyday.
Simone Harouche: When I wear this necklace, my face looks more sculpted and my cheekbones appear higher, because the collar sits at the base of my neck. It draws your attention upward to frame your face and jawline
Elin Strong: When I wear my Sol Lariat necklace, my face looks brighter because the gold brings warmth to my complexion, while the pendant draws the eye downward and adds a bit of verticality. But I’m sure some of the effects I’m perceiving are emotional. I bought it on my birthday during my first overnight trip away from my daughter, Soleil, so wearing it feels like both a celebration and a way to keep her close. Most of my favorite jewelry pieces are vintage or well-worn, so I don’t have a link for this one, but I do have a link for the dual-birthstone necklace layered beneath it, which I literally wear every day.
Alex DiCapo Patel: This is a new necklace in the rotation, and I’ve been wearing it on repeat. I never take off the three delicate necklaces shown here, so layering a beaded piece like this on top instantly makes everything feel a little more intentional. I love how it elongates my neckline and adds a bit more definition. Finding a statement piece that complements your everyday jewelry, rather than competing with it, is always the key.
Maura Brannigan: My two daily necklaces are both gifts from my husband, and both feel almost too perfect for your premise: Anna Sheffield garnet solitaire (yellow gold chain, unfortunately, no longer available): My “push” gift after our first daughter was born. I chose garnet because it’s my husband’s birthstone; I wanted something that would remind me every day of what we’ve built together.
This is a gift after our second daughter arrived, engraved with both girls’ initials. Kinn is an LA-based indie jeweler founded by Jennie Yoon and the quality is just exceptional. When I wear this necklace, my face looks more elongated because the delicate chains draw the eye down toward my collarbone, creating a long, gentle line that makes my neck look longer and my whole upper half more graceful.
Allison Bornstein: I often use long necklaces, like this one, not to sculpt my face but to make my torso appear longer. I love a longer necklace and I find that having something that draws the eye down my top half can add some depth and make me look longer in general! I think it is all about balancing the visual weight and guiding the eye!
Take Care of Yourself : I have two picks. This is a dainty necklace and it’s very special to me because it’s the diamond from my grandmother Sophie’s engagement ring. It’s a simple diamond in a bezel on a very delicate gold chain that really glitters in the light. I feel like the shape of the diamond and where it falls really punctuates my entire face. When I wear it, my eyes look brighter. I like to think that’s the brilliant spirit of my grandmother.
And this necklace is new and I am absolutely loving it for summer! It feels like when I wear it, I have a totally different personality (very Gemini of me...). The effect I love is not necessarily about my face, but how it pairs with my bob. Because my hair is quite thick and dark, I love that it balances it out in a bold, bright way. Also, because each bead is different, it really complements the blunt nature of my cut.
