No. 113: Underrated & Overlooked: Mutha Deodorant
Swore I’d go back to my former deodorant post-pregnancy. I lied.
This series spotlights the beauty products that fly under the radar and are never considered the hero, but are 100% not to be missed.

Deodorant is a category where most people settle. They try all the usual suspects and when asked how _____ deodorant is, the response is usually, “It’s fine.” I have yet to hear someone say a “clean” (eye roll) deodorant has fully benefited their armpits and changed their life.
When I got pregnant, I finally swapped out my very beloved Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant, aluminum, talc, and all. I said quietly to myself as I bought a new deodorant, that I’d be back, don’t you worry.
True to form, the deodorant I used throughout my entire pregnancy was the aforementioned, “Fine.” A few weeks before giving birth, I was sent the Mutha Deodorant. I started using it because the citrusy scent was fantastic. And I noticed at the sweatiest part of my pregnancy, my underarms were the driest (in a good way) they’d felt in months.
The Mutha Deodorant keeps me dry and fresh thanks to arrowroot powder. Plus, it smells incredible: think grapefruit, litsea (a lemony aroma), and green foliage, which I can best describe as citrusy and slightly sweet (never tart). And while there are no woody elements, there’s a moodiness to the scent.
It’s been 14 months since I had my baby boy. Two months post-breastfeeding and I’m still using Mutha. I kept waiting to go back to Donna Karan, but I never did and don’t plan to. And that says a hell of a lot.
MUTHA HONORABLE MENTIONS
Vitamin C is a star ingredient in the world of skincare, but not all are created equal. But there is a stabilized form of it known as THD, which is a great option for sensitive skin. It’s also blended with niacinamide, a favorite ingredient of mine for strengthening skin and reducing inflammation. I’m not a huge fan of scented skincare products and this might be a strange description, but it’s excellent; trust me: it smells as if you lit a match and quickly blew it out. But it’s very, very subtle.
The texture of this body product is rich and velvety and the name truly says it all. It melts into the skin, but doesn’t feel greasy or have that annoying slick feeling like when you put on boxers at night and your legs create a slippery friction.
